Position Summary:
St. Johns Ship Building, Inc. is seeking a skilled Marine Electrician to support the construction, repair, maintenance, and testing of marine electrical systems aboard aluminum and steel vessels. The Marine Electrician will install, troubleshoot, and repair electrical components and systems in accordance with shipyard standards, customer specifications, and applicable marine regulations.
This position requires experience working in industrial and marine environments, the ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair marine electrical systems aboard vessels and within shipyard facilities.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Install and terminate electrical cables, conduits, panels, breakers, transformers, motors, lighting systems, and control systems.
- Perform testing and diagnostics on electrical systems using meters and other testing equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical issues involving power distribution, motor controls, PLCs, VFDs, alarms, and communication systems.
- Assist with startup, commissioning, and operational testing of vessel electrical systems.
- Ensure all work complies with company quality standards, customer specifications, and applicable electrical codes and marine regulations.
- Work closely with supervisors, engineers, welders, ship fitters, and other trades to complete projects on schedule.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas while following all safety procedures.
- Perform work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and varying outdoor weather conditions.
- Support shipyard production schedules and overtime requirements as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 5 years of industrial or marine electrical experience preferred.
- Shipyard or marine industry experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with:
- 3-phase motors and motor controls.
- PLCs.
- VFDs.
- Electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical schematics.
- Knowledge of marine electrical systems, NEC standards, and safe electrical work practices.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Must be dependable, safety-oriented, and detail-focused.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tight or confined spaces for extended periods.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures and industrial shipyard environments.
- Ability to work at heights and aboard vessels under construction or repair.
Work Environment:
- Industrial shipyard environment.
- Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and varying weather conditions.
- Required use of PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and respirators when necessary.
Preferred Skills:
- Marine vessel construction or repair experience.
- Experience with aluminum and steel vessel electrical systems.
- Understanding of government or military vessel requirements is a plus.
- OSHA or marine electrical certifications preferred.
