Position Summary:
Oversees all functions pertaining to the Ship Fit department. Plans, directs, or coordinates the work activities and resources in the Ship Fit department necessary for new construction and repairs in accordance with cost, quality, and quantity specifications. Fabricate, lay out, position, align, and fit parts of structural metal products.

Supervises (including hiring, orienting, training, evaluating, and discharging) the shipfitters and shipfitter helpers to ensure they receive the training and support required for optimal performance.  Maintains up-to-date supervision records on each employee. Completes all staff evaluations and any required staff disciplinary actions as requested and on time. Ensures that the selection of employees is administered without regard to race, religion, color, veteran’s status, national origin, citizenship, sex, age, or non-job-related disability and consistent with Affirmative Action objectives and EEO laws.  Responsible for ensuring excellent customer service and performance by subordinate staff.
Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are as follows: ship fit components of the ship either repair or new builds are completed on time, to specifications, and within scope of the project 100% of the time; ensures staffing levels are adequate to meet the deadlines; follows up with team members to ensure that they have proper training and tools to complete their jobs; completes all training assigned on time 100% of the time; and ensures that team has completed their training 95% of the time.

Essential Functions Statement(s):
  • Directs and coordinate ship fit department of St. Johns Ship Building's projects.
  • Meets or exceeds the production deadlines for the ship fit shop.
  • Ensures that the ship fit shop budget is meets or exceeds goals.
  • Review ship fit production schedules and production orders to make decisions concerning inventory requirements, work procedures, and duty assignments, considering budgetary limitations and time constraints.
  • Review operations and confer with technical or executive staff to resolve production or employee problems.
  • Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
  • Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • Tack-weld fitted parts together.
  • Lay out and examine metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
  • Locate and mark work piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.
  • Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
  • Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.
  • Move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
  • Set up and operate fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.
  • Hammer, chip, and grind work pieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
  • Smooth work piece edges and fix taps, tubes, and valves.
  • Design and construct templates and fixtures, using hand tools.
  • Straighten warped or bent parts, using sledges, hand torches, straightening presses, or bulldozers.
  • Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to work pieces, using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and soapstone.
  • Set up face blocks, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.
  • Direct welders to build up low spots or short pieces with weld.
  • Lift or move materials and finished products, using large cranes.
  • Heat-treat parts, using acetylene torches.
  • Preheat work pieces to make them malleable, using hand torches or furnaces.
  • Install boilers, containers, and other structures.
  • Erect ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies.
  • And miscellaneous duties as may be required.

Skills & Abilities:
  • Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Experience: Five or more years related experience in a ship fit department.  Prefer experience working in a shipyard. Two or more years of experience supervising subordinate staff, prefer experience supervising trade staff.
  • Computer Skills: General Computer Skills, Microsoft Office.
